Appledore Festivals and Annual Events

The small town of Appledore with just 2,000 residents puts on a remarkable calendar of events which are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

Appledore Visual Arts Festival

June 7th -10th 2012
Appledore has an excellent range of gifted local artists, some of whom have galleries around the town. Local craftsmen display their products for sale in the Appledore Crafts Company Gallery where visitors can buy locally made ceramics, wood, glass, metal, leather, textiles, baskets, furniture, studio pottery, painting, jewellery, photography and printmaking.

The arts community of Appledore organize a promotional festival of their work on a different theme each year at the end of May/early June. The festival began in 1997 and is now considered one of the major events in the South West as it continues to expand. It currently includes a rich programme of exhibitions, events, competitions, auctions, educational projects and workshops for all ages and interests.

Appledore Lifeboat Open Day

2012 dates unknown
Held around July 25, the Appledore Lifeboat Open Day is a family fun day to raise funds for the running of this voluntary service. Visitors get a chance to view both the inshore and offshore boats which are based at Appledore. The RNLI also has many other events throughout the year at the lifeboat station.

Appledore and Instow Regatta

29th July 2012
The Appledore & Instow Regatta is a celebration of all things maritime with a week of events organised for all to enjoy, and where possible, encouraged to take part and have fun.

The Regatta commences with the ‘Regatta Open Day’ on the Sunday 29th July 2012 with a variety of activities, traditions and events are organised throughout the Regatta week including:

Art Show, Crabbing Competition, Fishing Competition, Sailing Boat Race, Gig Boat Racing, Greasy Pole, Model Yacht Racing, Outboard Motor Race, Pilot Gig Race, Rowing, Sculling over the stern and the Boat Tug of War, Miller & Sweep Flour Battle with a variety of other events, activities and stall holders.

Appledore Carnival

2012 unannounced
Appledore Carnival takes place in mid-August each year and has a colourful parade led by drummers, dancers and costumed flag bearers. The evening ends with fireworks over the waterfront.

Appledore Book Festival

Sept 29th – Oct 7th 2012
This cultural event takes place each September and originally it was staged simply to raise funds for the local library. Such was its success it has since become an annual event.
The festival invites many well-known authors to host talks and previous speakers have ranged from crime writers to politicians.
